 VALTREX (VALACYCLOVIR-ORAL) is a prescription medication used to genital herpes, herpes zoster (shingles), and herpes simplex (cold sores). VALTREX® is the only once-a-day antiviral product which has been proven to suppress future outbreaks of genital herpes. VALTREX® works by disrupting the reproduction process of the herpes virus. This prevents the virus from spreading to other cells in the body.
HOW TO TAKE THIS MEDICATION
Take VALTREX® only as prescribed. DO NOT skip doses or stop taking VALTREX® without your doctor's approval.
SIDE EFFECTS
It takes time for your body to adjust to the medication. During this time you may experience some of the following side effects: Nausea, vomiting, headache, loss of appetite, weakness, stomach pain or dizziness. If any of these symptoms become bothersome, inform your doctor. If your condition does not improve or if it becomes worse, notify your doctor. He or she may be able to make adjustments to your dose.
PRECAUTIONS
Tell your doctor about any medical problems you have, especially if you have a history of kidney disease, blood disorders or if you allergic to any foods or medicines. If you are pregnant or nursing, talk to your doctor about the risk involved with taking VALTREX®.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Advise your doctor about any over-the-counter or prescription medications you may be taking including cimetidine or probenecid.
EFFECTIVENESS
This medication is most effective when it is taken as a suppressive measure or if it is started within 48 hours upon the first sign of symptoms.
MISSED DOSE
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remember. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE
Keep this and all medications out of the reach from children. Store at room temperature between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 to 25 degrees C) away from heat and light.
